Description

If you only have one tour day on Sal Island, this is the one to choose. In 4 hours, this private tour covers the three natural sites that define Cape Verde’s most visited island — and does it at your pace, with your group, and without sharing the experience with strangers.

The tour begins at Buracona in the morning, when the light is at its best. Your Kriol Trip guide leads the group to the Buracona Museum first — a 3D model of Sal Island, geological exhibits, local marine life and bird displays that bring the landscape to life before you step outside. Museum entry is included. From there, it is a short walk to the Blue Eye itself: the volcanic rock formation where morning sunlight passes through the water and illuminates the pool below in an intense, electric blue. One of the seven natural wonders of Cape Verde.

Next, the route continues to Shark Bay (Baía dos Tubarões) — turquoise rock pools where nurse sharks drift calmly through shallow, crystal-clear water. Despite the name, these are harmless, bottom-dwelling fish. The bay is one of the most photographed spots in Cape Verde and consistently one of the most talked-about experiences visitors take home.

The final stop is Pedra de Lume — a salt lake inside an extinct volcanic crater mined since 1805. Entry is included. The hyper-saline water allows you to float effortlessly, Dead Sea-style. At the lake edges, natural mineral mud and salt deposits make for a spontaneous skin spa treatment. Your guide explains how this remote volcanic crater gave the island its name — Sal, meaning salt — and shaped the first permanent settlements on the island.

Buracona + Shark Bay + Pedra de Lume, Sal Island, Cape Verde · Departure: hotel pickup from anywhere on Sal Island.

Hotel pickup is included from anywhere on Sal Island. The tour runs for approximately 4 hours. Bring a swimsuit for Pedra de Lume and comfortable shoes for the rocky terrain at Buracona.

Important Information

  • The Blue Eye is a natural phenomenon — best viewed mid-morning when sunlight hits the water at the right angle. Visibility depends on weather and sea conditions.
  • Bring a swimsuit and towel — floating in Pedra de Lume is the highlight of the second half of the tour.
  • Water shoes are strongly recommended for both Buracona (rocky terrain) and Pedra de Lume (sharp salt crystals on lake floor). Rental available at Pedra de Lume for €2.
  • After the salt lake, rinse off thoroughly — salt residue stays on skin and clothing.
  • The nurse sharks at Shark Bay are non-aggressive nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum).
  • Swimming in Buracona’s natural pools is possible when sea conditions are safe — guide assesses on arrival.
  • Suitable for all ages. Children enter Buracona Museum free of charge.
  • Itinerary order may be adjusted depending on conditions and group pace.
